THE number 1 question I have been asked in every country I have conducted lessons and workshops in (often using an interpreter) is… ‘How Do I Sing Through My Break’ without pushing or cracking.
The first item on the list is to experience the difference between what you are doing now (assuming it isn’t working) and what you want to achieve. This is best discovered by some very specific exercises that ‘trick’ your voice into a different coordination. Most often these exercises will assist you in dropping the weight ( pushing, tightening, screaming etc) and give you a lighter connection to start with. Be prepared as this will often feel weird. The measurement of success is that you experience a sensation of going from low to high without breaking or disconnecting! Knowing the difference between these 2 aspects is crucial as this new found ‘spot’ will become the foundation on which you build your voice.
In my experience unless there is something wrong with your voice physically, there is no reason that you can’t improve this area, and when you do you will have more options with your singing!

Light and right is better than strong and wrong
