What to Eat and What to Drink Before Singing

In my vast experience as a singer, performer and teacher I have been asked so many questions on this topic.

Please note; experiment and measure by result. These ideas do NOT constitute medical advice

Before singing, it’s best to focus on foods and drinks that will keep your vocal cords hydrated and your energy levels up. Here are some friendly suggestions:

Foods:
– Light snacks: Opt for something easy to digest, like a banana or a small handful of nuts. These can provide quick energy without weighing you down. Never have a huge meal before performing as the energy to digest will rob your body of energy as it uses its resources to assimilate and digest.
– Avoid dairy: Dairy products can create mucus, which might affect your vocal performance, so it’s best to steer clear of them before singing.
– Hydrating fruits: Water-rich fruits like watermelon or oranges can be refreshing and help keep you hydrated. I have personally found that pineapple juice can be beneficial

Drinks:
– Water: Staying hydrated is key! Drink plenty of water before you sing to keep your vocal cords lubricated. There is some controversy surrounding the appropriate amount of water to consume. As a general rule you want to drink .033 mls of water per kg of body weight, more if you exercise vigorously. Once again, experiment and measure by results
– Herbal tea: A warm cup of herbal tea (like chamomile or ginger) can be soothing for your throat. Just make sure it’s not too hot!
– Avoid caffeine and alcohol: These can dehydrate you, which is not ideal for singing. Alcohol can impair your nervous system and interfere with your coordination vocally

Carbonated Drinks I have personally found that eliminating carbonated drinks (fizzy soda etc) has made an remarkable difference to my voice in particular my speaking voice

Remember, everyone’s body is different, so it’s good to find what works best for you. Happy singing! 🎤✨
