After 40 years in the music business I have had the unique opportunity to receive coaching and advice from some of the best vocal coaches, producers and directors all around the world. As a result I have been able to glean the best ideas and bring to you.
Following are some to ponder:
- Avoid toxic coaches that tell negative stories about the music industry, their own career, tv shows, other teachers or ex students. Your lesson should be about building your confidence, your voice skills and preparing you for whatever task is at hand
- Look for someone that can produce evidence in their own voice what they teach. Way too often some coaches are not living the very principals they preach. E.g If you went to a personal trainer who wasn’t really fit, they had a hamburger in one hand and a cigarette in the other, you would probably pass
- Look for someone that has a background in performance (even if they are now retired). The experience of the coach is paramount especially if you want to become a live performance artist
- Check out that coaches students (not just the big names they teach). Sometimes a coach will get lucky and attract a star. The real essence of the quality of the coaching is in the average student that has improved
- Make certain that the coach has YOUR best interests, goals and aspirations in mind
